8 Things You'll Love About Carnival's Mardi Gras

mardi gras cruise ship

Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras is voted as the best overall cruise ship of 2022 in Cruise Hive's annual Cruise Ship Awards. RMS Empress of Canada was an ocean liner built in 1961 by Vickers-Armstrongs, Walker-on-Tyne, England, for Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd.  The liner sailed in the trans-Atlantic trade between Liverpool and Canada. Ted Arison certainly had an eye for choosing the right ship; the RMS Empress of Canada was a well-maintained vessel and certainly in better shape than some pre-war vessels offering cruises from Miami.

The ship has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft) and gas capacity 520 m3. The ship's bunkering takes ~8 hours and her LNG capacity is enough for ~14 days of operation (navigation and onboard electricity production). A signature outdoor fun facility is the ropes course SkyCourse (length 600 ft / 183 m).

THE ULTIMATE PLAYGROUND

The “Ultimate Playground” zone on the upper decks features BOLT, the world’s first roller coaster at sea. BOLT’s self-propelled cars take passengers on high thrill rides of up to 40 mph (64 kph) on an 800-foot track with a stunning view of the ocean. A Carnival Excel Suite aboard Mardi Gras is the kind of room that proves that vacation and comfort go hand-in-hand.

Carnival Mardi Gras Review

We haven't seen the full menu yet, but we're hoping the dessert menu has beignets. One unique feature of the roller coaster allows passengers to choose the ride’s speed, allowing for greater personalization. BOLT features self-propelled, all-electric, motorcycle-style vehicles that propel thrill-seekers to 40 mph (64 kph) along its 800-foot track. At its peak, passengers will get a view as high as 187 feet above the ocean as the ride climbs, dips, and swings around the track. Delays caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a small shipyard fire, resulted in the late final delivery of the new Mardi Gras.

The vessel was voted the Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship in 2020 and 2021. She was also voted Best New Cruise Ship in 2021 and Best Overall Cruise Ship in the same year. Back in 1972, it was a whole different challenge that Ted Arison was about to undertake when he purchased the RMS Empress of Canada.

So come on down and let a white-coated bartender know what your pleasure is. Ok, a few places — get ready for six distinct onboard zones featuring brand-new experiences for spectacularly getting down to food, drink and fun. Mardi Gras was up against many other ships across multiple cruise lines. There were no nominations within the category, and readers were able to type in their favorite ship. The LNG-powered vessel beats out ships from other major lines, including Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Grab a seat at the bar and order up a handcrafted Cuban cocktail like a traditional daiquiri or classic mojito. This bar is just steps from the pool, whose ocean view and atmosphere mingles with the bar's own, for a bit of that old-time Cuban resort flavor. BBQ, so we're building a Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse™ into this zone so it always tastes like summer here with freshly-smoked faves designed by Guy Fieri and original Parched Pig® beers brewed just feet away. If you're wondering where the pool and whirlpool are, we're so alike, you and us... And that's why we're sure you're gonna love The Watering Hole, a poolside bar we're building for aficionados of backyard-style relaxation.

Furthermore, accessible tables are available in all the dining venues, from the main dining room to Lido Deck buffet. Cruisers will be able to let the good times roll in Mardi Gras' French Quarter, one of six themed zones onboard. Styled after New Orleans (in)famous district, the French Quarter on Mardi Gras will be lined with bars, restaurants and music venues, including a jazz club offering live entertainment and handcrafted cocktails. Mardi Gras is an Excellence-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line.

You can expect towel animals nightly in the staterooms, twice-daily housekeeping, and smiles from everyone you interact with. The international crew, focused on helping passengers have the greatest cruise vacation possible, are also always eager to talk to guests young and old about their countries and life at sea. Outside on the sunny deck 16, beside the underrated, affordable a la carte Seafood Shack is a brand new destination for quick and complimentary bites, called Street Eats. A rotating menu at three separate food cart-style spots give guests new foods to try for free every day. Steam Dream serves up bao buns and pot stickers, and kebab and satay are found at Mad Sizzle, while Time Fries loads up everyone’s favorite side with a slew of toppings.

SkyCourse is part of the SportSquare (sports complex) with an indoor hangout, mini-bowling, mini-golf course, The Clubhouse, Ping-Pong area with tables, jogging track, interactive sports gaming, arcade basketball. Otherwise, you’ll spot long-time favorites serving up a variety of cuisines, from the Lido Marketplace buffet to the American-style, formal Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse. The ship was also built to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), marking another first for the vessel, as it’s the first LNG-powered ship that will call North America home. Carnival first signed with a Finnish shipbuilder for the vessel in 2016, with a projected delivery date of 2020. And while the ship was indeed delivered in 2020, many delays occurred along the process, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shipyard fires, which pushed the ship’s debut date from summer 2020 to summer 2021. No matter which stateroom you book on Mardi Gras, you can expect modern and calming decor, plenty of storage space, and all the comforts you expect when you sail with Carnival Cruise Line. If you plan to book a cruise vacation aboard Carnival’s Mardi Gras or just want to see what all the excitement is about, we’ll break down everything you need to know about Carnival’s mega-ship. In 1995 was created Royal Olympic Cruise Lines as a merger of "Epirotiki Line" and "Sun Line". In 2000, all scheduled voyages were canceled and the boat was laid up in Port Piraeus-Athens Greece. In 2001, the ship (renamed "Apollon") re-entered service for short-breaks (3-4-day) roundtrips from homeport Piraeus. In 2003, the 42-years-old liner was laid up again, and soon sold for scrap.

Mardi Gras has already completed two sets of sea trials in the Baltic and is now in the final stages of outfitting. With Carnival suspending operations until February 2021, Mardi Gras will be among the early few cruise ships to begin sailings from Florida. Food is a big part of any cruise, and there will plenty on the Carnival Mardi Gras.
